A little sparrow nested on a strong branch deep in the forest. One blazing afternoon, a tired elephant pushed beneath the tree searching for shade. Irritated by the heat, he shook the trunk and snapped the branch. The nest tumbled down. The sparrow’s eggs cracked, and her hopes for that season were lost.

Her friend, a woodpecker, found her grieving. ‘I cannot undo what happened,’ he said, ‘but you should not face such carelessness alone.’ He called Lute-Buzz the gnat and Cloud-Messenger the frog. Each friend was small, yet each had a different gift.

They made a plan. Lute-Buzz hummed a soothing tune near the elephant’s ears until he closed his eyes. The woodpecker tapped sharply on a tree beside him, turning him away from the nesting grove. Farther ahead, Cloud-Messenger croaked beside a muddy hollow. Thinking he heard a cool pond, the elephant followed and sank knee-deep in sticky mud.

The elephant struggled, but the more he pushed, the deeper his feet settled. The four friends stood on the bank. ‘Your strength damaged a home because you used it without care,’ called the sparrow. ‘Now you need the help of creatures you hardly noticed.’

Ashamed, the elephant apologized. The frog showed him the firmest ground, the woodpecker marked a safe path, the gnat guided his ears toward their calls, and the sparrow fetched a vine. Together they helped him climb out.

The elephant carried a fallen branch to a safer tree and gently lifted nesting grass into place. He guarded the grove whenever storms came, and the sparrow later raised a lively family there. The forest remembered that power deserves respect only when it is guided by care—and that teamwork can make the mighty listen.
