How Supersmart Won His Feast

A jackal named Supersmart found an elephant that had died naturally in the forest. It could feed him for many days, but its hide was far too thick for his small teeth.

A lion arrived first. Supersmart bowed and said, “Your Majesty, I have guarded this meal for you.” The lion replied proudly, “I do not take what another creature has found,” and gave it to the jackal before walking away.

Next came a tiger. Supersmart whispered, “A lion claimed this elephant and asked me to watch for tigers.” The tiger wanted no quarrel with a lion and hurried off.

Then a hungry leopard appeared. Supersmart welcomed him warmly. “You may eat while the lion is away,” he said. The leopard’s strong teeth opened the tough hide. As soon as there was a useful opening, Supersmart called, “The lion may be returning!” The cautious leopard vanished into the trees.

At last another jackal approached and claimed an equal share. Supersmart could not impress or frighten someone who knew every jackal trick. So he stood his ground, gave a fierce warning bark, and chased the rival from the clearing.

Supersmart finally reached the food and ate comfortably. He had used respect with the powerful lion, uncertainty with the bold tiger, opportunity with the useful leopard, and courage with his equal. Cleverness is not one trick repeated—it is noticing who stands before you and choosing the right response.
