Smart the Jackal's Cleverness Trap

Thunder-Fang the lion injured his paw while defending the forest from a wild elephant. Until he healed, his court had little food. With him lived Spike-Ear the camel, Meat-Face the wolf and Smart the jackal, who was proud of solving every problem with a trick.

Smart told Spike-Ear, ‘Lend the king your travel baskets. I guarantee you will receive twice as much later.’ Trusting the court, the camel agreed. But Smart secretly planned to keep the best food after everyone left.

When Thunder-Fang went to wash at the river, Smart invited the hungry wolf to taste one sweet cake. The moment Meat-Face did, Smart cried, ‘The king is returning!’ Then he told Thunder-Fang that the wolf had raided the baskets. Frightened by the lion’s anger, Meat-Face ran away before he could explain.

Soon caravan bells rang beyond the trees. Smart whispered to the lion, ‘That is the keeper of debts. He has come to demand a thousand baskets for the camel’s loan!’ Thunder-Fang, already tired and confused, limped into the hills. Smart sat alone beside the food and congratulated himself.

But the caravan belonged to Spike-Ear’s old friends. They found Meat-Face on the road, heard his story and returned together. Thunder-Fang also realized that honest debts do not multiply from two baskets to a thousand in one afternoon. All three confronted Smart before he could touch the remaining food.

Smart admitted each lie. Spike-Ear took back his baskets, Meat-Face cleared his name, and Thunder-Fang removed Smart from the council until he could earn trust through honest work. Smart had outwitted everyone for an hour, but his tricks left him hungry and alone. At last he learned that cleverness is valuable only when it serves the truth.

__Moral: __Cleverness used only for selfish gain becomes a trap for the deceiver.
