How the Udupi Krishna Deity Was Revealed

A beloved Udupi tradition tells that Rukmini adored Krishna's childhood form. Vishvakarma therefore fashioned a deity of child Krishna holding a churning rod in one hand and a rope in the other.

Long after Krishna's earthly life, the deity was hidden inside a great mass of sacred gopichandana clay. Sailors later loaded the heavy block onto their ship as ballast, unaware of the treasure within.

As the ship passed the Malpe coast near Udupi, a fierce storm arose. Madhvacharya, who was praying on shore, saw the sailors' danger. Tradition says his prayer calmed the winds and guided the ship safely to land.

The grateful captain invited Madhvacharya to choose any gift from the ship. The saint asked only for the apparently ordinary block of gopichandana.

While the heavy block was being moved, it split open. Inside was the beautiful child Krishna deity. Many people could not shift it, but Madhvacharya lifted it gently in his arms as easily as a little child. He carried the deity to Udupi, where generations of devotees have remembered this wondrous revelation.
