Vishnupriya's Letter to Lord Jagannath

Devotional tradition remembers Vishnupriya, a princess of Jaipur, as a devoted worshipper of Lord Jagannath. One night she dreamed that Jagannath waited with open arms to receive a garland. From then on, her heart was filled with love for him.

Vishnupriya wrote a letter describing the Lord's limitless splendour and grace. At its end she offered the only gift she believed was truly hers: “Your home is filled with jewels and Lakshmi is your queen. What can I give that you do not possess? I offer you my mind and heart. Please accept them.”

A priest travelling toward Puri heard of her devotion and agreed to carry the letter. But because it did not look valuable, he carelessly threw it onto a rubbish heap.

That night Jagannath appeared in the priest's dream, grieved that a devotee's gift had been discarded. “Find her letter,” the Lord commanded. “Preserve it with honour and offer it to me. Whatever my devotee sends with love, I accept.”

The ashamed priest searched until he found the letter. Devotional tellings say it shone with a mysterious golden radiance. He carried it reverently to Jagannath, understanding at last that the worth of a gift lies not in its price, but in the love it carries.
