The Blue Jackal
Panchatantra
Once, a hungry jackal wandered into a village in search of food. Before he could find anything, several village dogs spotted him and gave chase.

Frightened, the jackal ran through lanes and courtyards as fast as he could. He slipped into a dyer's workshop and jumped into a large vat filled with blue dye. The dogs rushed past without seeing him and eventually went away.
When the jackal climbed out, every part of his coat had turned bright blue.

He returned to the forest, but none of the animals recognized him. The lion stared. The tiger stepped back. The elephant raised her trunk in surprise, and the deer whispered among themselves. They had never seen a blue animal before.
An idea came to the jackal. Standing tall, he declared, “The King of Heaven has sent me to rule over every animal. From today onward, I am your king.”
The animals believed him and bowed. The lion became his guard, the tiger brought him food, and the other animals served him with respect.

The blue jackal enjoyed his comfortable new life. But he knew that other jackals would recognize his voice and shape. To protect his secret, he ordered every jackal to remain far away.
One moonlit night, he heard a group of jackals howling beyond the trees. The familiar sound filled him with excitement. For a moment, he forgot his blue coat, his grand speeches, and the animals watching him.
He lifted his nose and answered with a loud, joyful howl.
The lion, tiger, elephant, and deer froze. They recognized the ordinary call of a jackal at once.

“He was never sent from heaven,” said the lion. “He tricked us!”
Angry at being deceived, the animals chased the blue jackal out of the forest. No one harmed him, but they made it clear that he could no longer rule them. The jackal ran away and never returned.
The animals chose their leaders more carefully after that. They remembered that a surprising appearance does not prove that someone is wise, honest, or worthy of trust.

The blue color had helped the jackal fool everyone for a little while, but one honest sound revealed the truth. A disguise may change how someone looks; it cannot change who that person truly is.
“Lies and false pride never last. Be honest and true to yourself.”
