Jhijhiya: A Folk Tradition of Bihar

Long ago, in the villages of Bihar, people celebrated Jhijhiya during the festival of Navratri. It is a beautiful folk tradition where women and girls sing and dance with a decorated clay pot called a jhijhiya.

According to folk beliefs, there was once a village troubled by an evil spirit that brought fear and sadness to the people. The villagers prayed to Goddess Durga for protection.

The brave women of the village came together. They decorated clay pots with small holes, placed a lamp inside, and danced while singing songs of courage and devotion. The glowing light from the jhijhiya symbolized the power of goodness and the victory of light over darkness.

Seeing the unity and faith of the villagers, the evil spirit disappeared, and peace returned to the village.

From that day, people continued the Jhijhiya tradition every year to celebrate courage, devotion, and togetherness.
